What is Café Scientifique?
Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science. The concept is based on the French Cafe Philosophique model. Originating in England, the concept quickly gained popularity and was taken to other countries. Similar but independent events have arisen in many cities using variations of the Café Sci or Science Café name. Meetings have taken place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. The events are known for their informal and friendly atmosphere, and are believed to improve the image of scientists and careers in science.
What is Tox on Tap?
Tox On Tap (ToT) is a non-profit organization that serves as a local chapter of the global organization Café Scientifique, a public science initiative. ToT was started in Saskatoon by Sarah Crawford and Carla Labarrère, two PhD Students in the Toxicology Centre at the University of Saskatchewan. Their goal was to create an environment that provided fellow students with an opportunity to not only discuss toxicology issues with scientists but to interact and inform the public of current science that may be important to the community.
ToT aims to demystify scientific research for the general public and empower non-scientists to more comfortably and accurately assess science and technology issues, particularly those that stem from toxicological impacts in the environment.
