Dr. John Giesy awarded an honorary degree from Masaryk University

Dr. John Giesy took over the honorary doctorate of Masaryk University in the field of environmental sciences on the proposal of the Faculty of Science.

John Paul Giesy focuses primarily on monitoring potentially toxic substances in the environment and assessing ecological risks in animals. He first pointed out, inter alia, that perfluorinated compounds used, for example, in the production of impregnants or teflon are a new class of substances that pollute the environment and have a number of health risks. Many of them are already banned today.

Giesy was born in the United States of America. He graduated from Michigan State University, where he studied limnology, a science dealing mainly with lakes and dams. Since 2006 he has been working in Canada, currently at the University of Saskatchewan. He is also involved in toxicology studies in wildlife. It focuses on the research of substances that affect the endocrine system of animals, their hormonal balance.
